First, RIP to Magoo. Second, this CD is upstairs in my CD book. Okay, now on to our scheduled programming...
This for Deion Sanders, Neon Deion, Primetime, Coach Prime and the Colorado Buffaloes. Now, you may be asking how does Rice-a-Roni, Tony! Toni! Toné! relate to Coach Prime?? There's actually another line from "Up Jumps the Boogie" that I'm focusing on:
See a white man scared from a Black man's power
See a Black man dead from a white man's power
I'm left scratching my head, feeling Ms. Sofia confused as to why Deion Sanders' proclamations are so problematic. Hell, we preach self-love is the best love. But when someone, let alone a Black someone, has the mitigated gall, the audacity to love themselves out loud for the masses to see, now it's too much. The dreaded too much is right up there with not to be rude, but... because we all know it's about to be rude AF.
I digress.
Muva Maya wrote a few stanzas about being phenomenal. Dwayne Carter proclaims to be the best rapper alive. Let's not act like Deion is a novice whose experiences lend itself only to Madden 2K. He's played in the Super Bowl and the World Series (the only one to do so). He's a Super Bowl champion. Pro Football Hall of Fame... ✅College Football Hall of Fame... ✅If anyone has earned the right to talk smack, I would say Prime is right up there.
Some may call it braggadocious, I see it as Black Man Joy. Deion Sanders isn't waiting for his casket to be covered in sprays of flowers. The man is collecting and smelling his roses right now, and deservedly so. There is space for humility and celebration to co-exist.
Activate your inner Prime and remember:
If you look good, you feel good, you feel good, you play good, you play good, they pay good.
